Scene Shop LogoEach Spring, Agape Actors Co-Op produces The Scene Shop, an annual short play festival. Each edition of The Scene Shop features 8-10 new, world premiere short plays averaging in 10-15 minutes in length.  Each play is directed by a first-time director, most of which are high-school age members of the Agape Actors Co-Op Professional Apprentice Program.

Writers are encouraged to submit plays for consideration during the submission period, which typically runs August – November.

How to Submit a Play for The Scene Shop

The submission period for the 2015 edition of The Scene Shop has closed.  The submission period for the 2016 edition will begin August 2015 and end November 2015.  The 2016 edition of The Scene Shop will be produced in the Spring of 2016.

Considerations:

While we do not want to limit your creativity in any way, Agape Actors Co-Op asks that you consider the following before submitting your play or plays…

  • Agape Actors Co-Op regularly partners with East View High School in Georgetown, TX.  Should your play be produced, it will be directed by a student at East View High School and will be their directorial debut.  We ask that you be mindful of this in your writing (if you can say it without profanity, please say it without profanity).
  • Your play will be performed in the intimate, 72 seat East View High School Black Box Theatre and will be performed in rep with several other short plays as part of an evening of one acts.  Therefore, we ask that you keep the technical needs of your play as simple as possible.
  • Our theater company is located in Georgetown, TX, and our average audience member is 50+ years of age.
  • Agape Actors Co-Op has actors and actresses of all ages (13-80) at our disposal.
 Rules:

Below are the rules used during the submission process for the 2015 edition of The Scene Shop.

  • Scriptscan be submitted through e-mail or via postal mail.
    • If submitted via postal mail, you must submit THREE copies of your script.
  • Plays should be no longer than 15 minutes in length when read or performed.
  • Plays should be typed and double-spaced.
  • Submit as many plays as you wish.
  • Plays written by multiple authors may be submitted, provided they meet the other guidelines and rules outlined here.
  • Plays must be submitted with a completed submission form (found below).  Please submit one completed submission form per entry.  The form should be printed and included with submissions mailed by post.  For e-mail submissions, please simply cut and paste the form below or send as an attachment.
  • The title of play and page numbers should be on EACH page.
  • Do not include the playwright’s name on scripts, only on the submission form. (If names appear on the script pages, your entry WILL be disqualified)
  • Playsmust be submitted between the dates of August 1 and December 1, 2014 .
    • Electronic submissions must be sent no later than December 1, 2014.
    • Postal entries must be postmarked no later than December 1, 2014.
  • Plays may not have been previously published or produced.  We will accept plays that have been submitted to other contests or published on a personal website or blog.  Plays that have been published in a magazine, e-magazine, or in print will be deemed ineligible.
  • Musicals and adaptations of other author’s works will be deemed ineligible.  However, works inspired by characters or stories created by another author are eligible.
  • This contest is open to playwrights of all ages.  Minors will need to provide Parent or Guardian consent to enter.

Fine Print:

  • Submission of an entry will authorize Agape Actors Co-Op to reproduce and perform your entry with no royalties (for the purpose of furthering our Mission and to substantiate our existence as a Not-for-Profit entity). All subsequent publication and other ownership rights will be retained by the author. In all cases, the author will be fully notated and credited in the production’s program, on our website, and in all media and press notices.
  • The submission period ends on December 1, 2014.  Early or late submissions will not be accepted.
